What used to be known as SSL (Secure Socket Layer) has been replaced by TLS (Transport Layer Security).  There have been many advancements in crytographic internet communciations over the years, and SSL, which has suffered from a variety of security vulnerabilities (some of which turned out to be serious), is no longer being used because TLS is more secure and works in some fundamentally different ways that also help to make it more efficient and more versatile.
